Jessica Simpson Review From Country Thunder :)

    Kenosha News Online

apparently-=- she got booed. lol She tried to do a cover of Shana Twain-- and people were unhappy that she got to go on AFTER kellie pickler, who has been around much longer then jessica. So I wasn't alone in defending Kellie on that point.

Jessica Simpson performs at Country Thunder in Randall on Saturday. Her first foray into country music was met with a mixed reaction from Saturday’s crowd.

    Country fans turn into critics

    Simpson songs panned by many

RANDALL - Country music fans are probably the toughest music critics around.

Skepticism was elevated hours before Jessica Simpson's debut country performance, opening for Sara Evans, Saturday night at Country Thunder. With only one country single released, fans doubted if the pop diva could stack up against other country music acts.

"Just because she's dating Tony Romo it doesn't make her country," said Mike Rodriguez, 31, from Lake Geneva. "She doesn't fit in with country, and I'll have to drink a lot of beer to sit through her concert."

Zach Schlodt, 19, of Palatine, Ill., agreed. Simpson's heart isn't in country music, and she is just banking on the genre's current popularity, he said.

"She's an embarrassment to country music," he added.

    Link: Kenosha

The Texas native's first pop single "I Wanna Love You," debuted in 1999. Over the past several years, the songstress has attained superstardom.

Her country single was released this summer; however, her album is not due until Sept. 9.

The crowd welcomed Simpson with a mixture of boos and cheers Saturday night. She strutted onto the stage in Daisy Duke shorts, a white button-down shirt and cowboy boots as she sang a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots are Made for Walking."

Her set included several cover songs, such as Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again," and Shania Twain's "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?"

She also belted out songs featured on her upcoming album called "Do You Know," including the single "Come On Over."

To the disappointment of many audience members, she also sang one of her pop hits "With You."

So the question remains: Did Simpson prove herself?

It didn't sit well with audience members that Simpson played after a more established country singer, Kellie Pickler.

Many audience members found her attempt to crossover into country irritating and that her vocals lacked a southern sound.

"I just don't hear the country in her; I don't hear the twang. She's not good enough to be here," said Adam Matos, 21, from Arlington Heights, Ill.

One man summed her performance up in a single word.

"It's crap," said Ryan Sia, 28, from East Troy. "She doesn't belong here."

How nice of you to post the meanest review you could find.

    From a blog at cmt.com:
I was very much a skeptic at first, but am willing to give everyone a chance. Well, when I saw her live last night at Country Thunder I was AMAZED!!!! She was really, really good. I didn’t realize she had the voice that she does. My foot is definitly in my mouth for past remarks I’ve made. She has a sort of country/gospel sound that I really like. My girlfriend filled me in that she first recorded gospel music as an early teen and it came thru in the music. Some of her new material that is suppose to be on her new album is inspirational and I’m glad she has decided to make her home here in country music. We should all feel blessed for that, seriously. Wait, until you hear some of her other songs and you’ll be seeing what I’m talking about.

btw I was next to a couple who were very vocal and booing Jessica as she came up onto the stage and by the end of her set she made some fans out of them too. The one dude was even moved to tears on one song telling his wife, I assumed, that her voice made him think about an angel landing on earth and embracing the audience with lyrics that really touched him.

Amazing! I’ve actually got 9-9-08 reserved in my calander to pick up a copy of her cd and I will not be ashamed to blast it on my car stereo. And off-topic, this whole Carrie vs. Jessica argument is really childish and doesn’t belong in country music. I respect both of these young female singers and will support the music I enjoy to listen to. That being said, some of the songs Jessica sung last night blew away songs I’ve heard recently by all these other supposedly ‘authentic’ country singers. I hope that everyone will just be patient and not judge, in which I think we shouldn’t even judge cause that is left up to God, but be respectful and open up our arms to Jessica and embrace her as she has started to do with so many new listeners and newly-enlisted fans.

    GREAT JOB JESSICA!!!!!
Focus on the positives, not the negatives. It'll make your life a lot happier. (I've read the book The Secret..Oprah suggested it. )

    ^^lol

i heard Jonas Brothers did a cover of "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" at their concert.

i didnt expect the country audience to like her much anyway (based on Tee's review). i think shes been stained too much in the pop world to have a real good chance in the country world. she might sing country, but shes still has a pop personality (from what i can tell).

I think she'll do alright, it just might take awhile. Because she has a good voice and is a great songwriter. She's great with her fans...country music just has to accept her.

I'm not surprised people booed either. These country festival crowds are rough and a lot of them probably had enough to drink that they thought it was OK to be rude. IMO it was a mistake to have her on between Kellie and Sara. They should've put her on earlier in the day.

Now there are a bunch of Jessica fans trying to do damage control by posting fake reviews in comments sections of different blogs. carrierox1 I'm not necessarily talking about the one you posted, it's others that I'm seeing some Jessica fans trying to spread. It's easy to tell they're fake. There's only 1 newspaper review and it's the one that's getting spread everywhere. Unfortunately for Jessica fans it's the one that says she got booed and quotes people saying they didn't care for her.

I feel bad for the people who like her having to read this. But if Jessica is the way her fans think she is she'll get back to rehearsal and try to put on a better show.

i'm no jessica simpson fan - however, is it necessary to put a smiley face on the heading? let's treat others as we would like to be treated. i'm sure if carrie got a bad review (tho that's rare), we wouldn't want it to be mean-spirited.

Some of the comments were a little on the harsh side. Once she bombs out of the country format, Joe will be hitting up the R&B people.

    lol classic.

^ I wasn't trying to be mean- I just posted the article-- but after the tshirt diss of Carrie- I think we have the right to dislike jess if we choose.

That blog from cmt seems odd too and almost fake-- as it it was written by a paid jessica rep from her camp--- the whole comment of her sounding like an angel and moving someone to tears is a bit over the top.

The set list she sang did not give rise to an emotional, tear jerker type of song- that would make one cry and think of an angel. lol If she had done that cover she does of "angel" that would be one thing- but that is a pop song and I don't think she performed it. Jessica has an ok voice- I never said she couldn't sing. She is ok-- nothing special but not bad. But saying she sings like an angel, kind of makes me want to boo too.

no offense meant to jessica fans here- I have no problem with you defending her...it is just that this blog seems very strange to me-- especially the tears part.

What slow ballad did she sing to bring someone to tears?? Doesn't sound like it from the newspaper article that she did any ballads.

I guess I am still mad at her for her petty tshirt diss of carrie- and that is why I smiled at the review. Had she left Carrie alone- I would not have done that.

Well, all I will say is that I wasn't surprised if she was booed but I think if she wants a chance in country that is fine but she should have started off small like everybody else.....start at small venues and work her way up; definitely don't go on after acts that have been in the country genre longer than you. I think it was a big mistake to let her go after Kellie P. She should have been the first act to go not the last or near the end. JMO. Also, I'm surprised they even let her perform at Country Thunder being so new to the genre. Don't they have smaller venues she could try first before trying Country Thunder?

Looks like JS is going to have her work cut out for her but if she really wants to do country then she should just try to stick w/ it and try to win country fans over one by one. But I personally think it will take a while before she is accepted unless she just has a super great country single on her album that just blows people away or moves people.

Jessica Simpson tries to go country
Gets mixed reviews from fans at Wisconsin concert

    updated 6:53 p.m. ET, Sun., July. 20, 2008
RANDALL, Wisc. - Jessica Simpson’s gone country – but can she stay there?

The aspiring crossover singer made her country concert debut at the Country Thunder USA Festival in Randall, Wisc. on Saturday, where she reached out to an unsure audience.

“I don’t know what your perception is of Jessica Simpson or what tabloid you buy, but I just want you to know that I’m just a girl from Texas; I’m just like you,” Simpson told the crowd, according to the Kenosha News. “I’m doing what I love and dating a boy.”

High-profile boyfriend and Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo may not have been there to comment, but concertgoers were quick to offer their opinions of Simpson’s show.

“I actually like her country songs better,” Mary Grace told the newspaper. “She has a great voice, plus, she’s adorable.”

In addition to her own material, Simpson reportedly sang country covers including Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” and Shania Twain’s “Who’s Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” But she didn’t win over everyone.

“I just don’t hear the country in her,” said Adam Matos, from Arlington Heights, Ill. “I don’t hear the twang. She’s not good enough to be here.”

Mike Rodriguez of Lake Geneva, Wisc., seconded that opinion.

“Just because she’s dating Tony Romo it doesn’t make her country,” he said. “She doesn’t fit in with country, and I’ll have to drink a lot of beer to sit through her concert.”

Simpson faced some steep competition at Country Thunder, where more established artists such as Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Sugarland were also on the bill. Her country album is due for release on September 9.

No offense to her fans but thank GOD she wasn't there the night Carrie and Taylor were. %&#$@#.
I'm seriously SO sick of people trying to be country. Like that whole Gone Country show ... I HATE it. Some people, yeah, they shoulda been Country to begin with ( Kelly Clarkson ... Miley Cryus too, acctually. ) But it's Jessica Simpson. She's ... Jessican Simpson. Enough said. Jessica Simpson and Country Music do not complement each other in my opinion.

there's something bout love, that breaks your heart.

Thanks for posting that, because it shows both sides.

I don't think it matters if they have twang or not. There's a lot of country singers who aren't twangy. That, in my opinion, doesn't determine whether or not someone is considered "country".
