I wonder what this clown Malec's feelings about Carrie would be if she had left Checotah to move to Nashville and made her way to the top by singing at bars around Nashville and received her record deal that way.

I have a feeling that they would be totally the opposite of what he feels now.

Oh I remember that! I also remember in that same review that his Love Story review apparently started with a "thumbs down", but because Taylor has potential, and she used symbolism that is apparently rarely used in country songs today, the he decided the good outweighed the bad so he ended up giving the song a "thumbs up". Even though a few comments before that he acknowledged that Taylor's use of symbolism failed to really execute what she was meaning to say.

That's like a teacher giving a student an A just for effort, even though the end result of that work is so completely wrong. Or someone who paid a guy to do some work for him - the work was completely half-a$$ed but just because he worked, the guy got paid anyway.

Read more of Jim Malec's past work and his personal bias against Carrie cannot be denied. It's not because he thinks Carrie's material is not up to par to her talents (just like what the past editor Matt C used to write there and what Jeff mentioned above), but he just plainly dislikes her. He wrote a column 2 years ago explaining why Miranda Lambert is overrated:

The Malec Minute: Why Miranda Lambert is Overrated | The 9513

He referred to himself as a voice of reason. And in pointing out Miranda's faults or shortcomings, he puts in snide remarks against Carrie in there. Which to me, is totally unnecessary and unwarranted. But he did anyway, and nothing proved his agenda against Carrie more than that.

^ true, but Jim still likes Taylor despite the fact that she is not even from the south. She is from Pennsylvania, and she only moved to Nashvlle for the sole purpose of a record deal, which her wealthy daddy bought her. So how is that "paying dues?" He is not being consistent, because Taylor was certainly not playing in honkey tonks at age 15. lol she got a record deal because her daddy helped finance it... yet somehow she is more "worthy" then Carrie because she got it on American Idol. lol

Well, I partially agree with some of what he's saying. The song isn't all that spectacular. However, I don't think it has anything to do with Carrie's singing, it's just a bland song in general and not suited for to be a #1 smash hit on modern country radio.

However, I'm not going to actually agree with this guy, because from what you guys have said, he's not exactly the most unbiased person in the world .

Interesting. Thanx for this info! No wonders he is whacked. He hates Carrie AND Miranda, yet worships Taylor. Pretty funny. Miranda is 1000x the songwriter that TS is.

I did notice him getting pretty upset that Taylor was being criticized on that site. lol He came to her defense quite a few times. lol Makes you wonder what the connection is there to the Swift family.

But Matt C left the 9513 blog last year and the site's gone downhill ever since. I didn't even realize he'd had that much of an impact but when you look at Jim Malec's stuff now, you appreciate that Matt C must have had a balancing influence. Brady Vercher's gotten really lazy too.
i didn't realize that. i dont read the 9513 too often. yes, Matt C was the one who wrote that piece predicting why Carrie would be the next invited to the opry. he's gone on record saying several times that he thinks she would make a really great country record and isnt a fan of the country pop stuff she does.

The other thing it helps to know about Jim Malec is that he's commented a few times about being a "professional" critic. The songwriter Chris Lindsey (who cowrote Wheel Of The World) has attacked them at the 9513 blog a couple times (IMO he's come as immature and over sensitive when he's done it). But I remember Jim's reply to him once was that he (Jim) IS a professional critic. His basis for saying that is that he writes for at least one rinkydink local newspaper. It's something Jim's repeated a few times so you know it's important to him to be considered a "professional".

But here's my thing. I don't care if you write for a blog, or a rinkydink newspaper or a big city newspaper or national magazine. I judge professionalism by the quality of your work. Jim's problem is that he's gotten more and more intellectually dishonest with his reviews and IMO there's not much that's more unprofessional than that. I don't know if it's because he's gotten so concerned with his reputation and wants to build the 9513 into something bigger or some other reason. But something's happened to him and it's unfortunately affected the 9513.

It's too bad because I used to enjoy reading there. Now I just go there to read the news and don't bother reading any of the reviews because there isn't much of anything to learn from the writers. IMO they're narrowing their audience.
jim needs an ego check... its no use discussing with him, because he talks like he is the know-all, talking to lowly commoners like us.

I have hesitated posting anything about this cause it just seems pointless, but for the sake of staying involved, all I can say is: Between the lines this guy, like many others, is having to conceed the fact that Carrie is a very talented person with a very special voice. But he will find ways to pick it apart if he can.
After reading that he perfers TS to Carrie or Miranda, I am convinced that he is the type to perfer fluf to substance. All the things that he disregards about Carrie and Miranda, Taylor couldn't manage on her best day.
Taylor is unconventional and he finds superiority in recognizing it.
The problem is nonconventional does not equate to talented automatically.
In other words, if every one likes what Carrie is doing, he is going to argue for arguement sake.
And he is just sounding silly.

Since it was discussed by a few above, this is an interesting comment that popped up:

Do a little searching here (good place to start: the article about Carrie being the perfect next choice for the Opry)

That was Matt C., and he’s gone now.

I must congratulate Jon for being the first to realize that I was, indeed, asked to leave The 9513 because of my excessive praise for Carrie Underwood.
That comment didn't have any name. I'm not sure if it's a legit post and they had his name blocked on there so that's why it didn't appear.

Well, if he was asked to leave b/c of his excessive praise of Carrie, they are dumb. I'm done w/ 9513. They go into my poopy drawer. Won't see me over there anymore until they give an objective critique.

People get sarcastic there so like you said I don't think it's legitimate. Matt C wasn't a big Carrie fan, just someone who recognizes her talent but it's not like he's a major fan of her country pop.

I also wouldn't think the 9513 people are THAT stupid but then again considering some of what Jim Malec's said I guess you can't be sure

^^^True. Matt C wasn't a big fan of Carrie's, but at least he was more objective in his review.

the name of the poster is Matt C. im sure its a sarcastic comment

you can see the names if you use firefox. for some reason, some of the names get blocked out on other browsers

Matt C is definitely not a fan of all of carrie's work. He was very harsh on her LN performance at the ACMs, but he did heap praise upon praise about her performance of MTWGA

Did you all notice this remark by Jim Malec on that page?

"I have no problem whatsoever being wrong about the music that I review. And I also have no problem with admitting that artists I don’t like deserve the praise that they receive."
