Underwood plays up small town, big-time -- chicagotribune.com

Underwood plays up small town, big-time

By Andy Downing | SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE October 6, 2008

Midway through Carrie Underwood's concert at a sold-out Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates Friday, the country singer listed her anxieties as she performs. She's concerned about falling (off a riser or down the stairs of a two-tiered stage) and wardrobe malfunctions ("Are my pants zipped?"). Despite huge success—the 2005 "American Idol" champ has sold more than 10 million records in her two-album career—she tries to show she's like her fans.

As such, the 95-minute, 18-song concert played up the singer's small-town roots ("I Ain't in Checotah Anymore" was a nod to her Oklahoma upbringing) and good ol' Southern charm: a trait whipped to the forefront when Underwood engaged in a brief duet with a 3-year-old audience member on "All-American Girl." But even as Underwood played Girl Next Door, she looked more like a Charlie's Angel, with four costume changes that saw her dress as everything from a would-be rebel (leather jacket and low-slung black fedora) to a princess set for a final spin around the ballroom. "I'm wondering about the Prince Charming factor in Illinois," she announced introducing "The More Boys I Meet," sounding like a Disney character sprung to life.

At times the show veered too saccharine. "Crazy Dreams" sounded like an inspirational poster ("There's a lot of wonder ... inside me and you") while "Jesus, Take the Wheel," a syrupy power ballad, stretched the power of prayer to laughable levels. Better was "Last Name," the eight-piece backing band locking into a thundering groove as Underwood railed about a regretful, booze-soaked night. And "Before He Cheats" saw the jilted singer taking a Louisville Slugger to a devious ex-boyfriend's car. She also shone on some tear-stained ballads, especially "I Told You So," where, backed by a lonesome wisp of slide guitar, she revealed that often the best revenge is moving on.

Overall good review- but why do they always have to add the strange, snarky comments? lol
can't they just give her a good review? lol

I guess this dude doesn't like inspirational ballads as he trashed JTTW and CD, but loved LN and BHC. figures. lol

anyway- not bad.

Glad he came up with something he liked at the end. Why is it guy reviewers always criticize the clothes. I really like the clothes changes. He even made fun of "Jesus Take the Wheel." I guess he did not know or care how big a hit that was. Don't agree with any of the negative snarky comments but oh well.

I liked the review except for the JTTW part, obviously this person is not one of very strong faith.

Seriously, beating on JTTW get real. That comment alone is so ridiculous that I couldn't even absorb the rest of the article.

JTTW has always had those critics who take the words as literal instead of inspirational. They see turning the wheel loose to pray as being a little to much. I guess they do not multi-task very well, lol. Overall it was a good review for the night.

I agree. Not only did he beat on it, he made fun of it. That is a good song so I don't understand that.

I do not understand why this writer must put down a song about having a strong faith, as if having a Christian religion is a bad thing !!!

Well, I'm not going to sweat this b/c I have come to realize that even Carrie's worst review aren't as bad as some other artist's reviews. Just look at JS's review. Now that it a harsh review!

Well it's obvious this critic prefers the bad girl songs and the heartbreak songs to the happy and inspirational songs. It's a good thing Carrie can do them all because all of the songs express some part of her whether it's her sense of humor, the hope and gratitude she feels, or the ups and downs of love.

Crazy Dreams is cheesy, but it's not something some failure sitting in their basement wrote just for the heck of it. She believes in everything in that song because she has experienced it. I think if this person put themeselves in Carrie's position and saw how many of her dreams really did come true, that he would understand why she chose to record a song like that.
