Comfortable temperatures and rain-free skies helped Indiana State Fair officials set an attendance record for the first Friday of the annual event.
The “Year of Trees” fair drew 88,085 people Friday, spokesman Andy Klotz said today.

In the fair’s first three days, ticket-takers recorded an attendance boost of nearly 20 percent over last year, which featured a corn theme and more heat. The fair drew 56,433 on Wednesday and 53,576 on Thursday. The fair began Wednesday and continues through Aug. 16.
Last year's 12-day run drew an estimated 746,421, and hot weather was cited for keeping attendance short of the record 900,365 who attended the fair during much better weather in 2004.
Klotz said the fairgrounds at 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway are also very busy today. Tonight, the rock band Daughtry will perform.
Skies have changed from mostly cloudy this morning to overcast this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service at Indianapolis. The temperature hit the upper 70s about 2 p.m. today and has fallen since that time. The temperature has not been above 80 degrees since Wednesday night.
Tonight’s forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 60 and light winds.
The pop group The Backstreet Boys will perform Sunday, while Disney Channel star Corbin Bleu sings on Monday. Sunny skies are expected both days, with temperatures topping out at or near 80.
